OSHA 10 vs OSHA 30: Which Certification Do You Need?
OSHA 10-Hour and OSHA 30-Hour are the two most common safety training certifications for US industrial workers. Learn which one you need, what they cover, and how to get certified online.
OSHA 10 vs OSHA 30: Which Certification Do You Need?
If you're working on an industrial construction site in the United States, you've probably been told you need "OSHA 10" or "OSHA 30." Here's what that means, which one you need, and how to get it.
What Is OSHA Training?
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is the US federal agency that regulates workplace safety. OSHA doesn't "certify" workers in the traditional sense — instead, it authorizes trainers to deliver "outreach" courses that end with a wallet card.
The two most common courses:
- OSHA 10-Hour: 10 hours of safety training, aimed at entry-level workers
- OSHA 30-Hour: 30 hours of safety training, aimed at supervisors and workers with safety responsibilities
OSHA 10-Hour: Who Needs It?
Required by law in several states for construction workers:
- New York (all public projects)
- Massachusetts
- Connecticut
- Rhode Island
- Missouri
- Nevada
- New Hampshire
Required by employers on most industrial construction sites, even in states without a legal mandate. Refineries, petrochemical plants, and LNG facilities typically require OSHA 10 as a minimum.
What OSHA 10 Covers
- Introduction to OSHA
- Fall protection (the #1 cause of construction fatalities)
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Health hazards in construction
- Electrical safety
- Struck-by and caught-in/between hazards
- Material handling, storage, and disposal
- Hand and power tools
Time to complete: 10 hours (can be done online in 2 days)
OSHA 30-Hour: Who Needs It?
Required for:
- Supervisors and foremen
- Safety coordinators
- Demolition workers
- Hazardous waste operations (HAZWOPER)
- Workers on large-scale industrial projects
What OSHA 30 Covers (beyond OSHA 10)
Everything in OSHA 10, plus:
- Managing safety for a team
- Conducting safety inspections
- Incident investigation
- Confined space entry
- Excavation safety
- Scaffolding safety
- Fire protection and prevention
- Welding and cutting safety
- Concrete and masonry construction
- Steel erection
Time to complete: 30 hours (typically 4-5 days online)
Which One Do You Need?
| Your role | Required cert |
|---|---|
| Entry-level pipefitter/welder | OSHA 10 |
| Experienced pipefitter/welder | OSHA 10 (30 preferred) |
| Foreman / supervisor | OSHA 30 |
| Safety coordinator | OSHA 30 |
| Demolition worker | OSHA 30 |
| General construction laborer | OSHA 10 |
Tip: If you're applying for a job and they say "OSHA certified," they usually mean OSHA 10. If they say "OSHA 30," they need the 30-hour version.

OSHA vs VCA vs SCC
| Certification | Country | Mandatory? | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| OSHA 10/30 | USA | State-dependent | Construction safety |
| VCA | Belgium/Netherlands | Yes (industry) | Industrial safety |
| SCC | Germany | Yes (contractors) | Contractor safety |
If you work in Europe, you need VCA or SCC. If you work in the US, you need OSHA. PipingBox Academy prepares you for all three.
